Preview: Borderland Spring Fling this weekend

The 2010 Borderland Spring Fling was fast approaching. With less than 2 weeks until the event, there were still several things that needed to be accomplished. Discs were en-route, shirts were being printed, and score cards were being created, but that's not all. We are bringing the players some extra holes for this years tournament which required some preparation. As Spring set in,  the course started to fill in, leaving little space for walking and a haven for ticks and poison ivy. The remaining eight blue tee boxes still remained untouched and without a proper tee. Fast forward to present day and the course has shaped up nicely to deliver a fantastic event for all our players and spectators.

It took a lot of hard work and dedication from everyone to get things together. The park chipped in and took on the task of mowing the fields and keeping the fairways clean. Dean spent his nights weed whacking and fine tuning the spots that the large mower deck couldn't reach. The volunteers also put in several hours of hard labor to get the remaining tee boxes in tip-top shape, requiring Hole 15 to be completely rebuilt and moved. Thanks to everyone for making this possible.

The event is stepping up to offer two days of competition for all Pro Divisions and the Am1 division. All divisions will be playing a total of 40 holes on Saturday. Two temporary holes will be a part of the 20 hole tournament layout. One hole is brand new and the other is an old friend revisited.

The new, "OB road" hole, lives up to it's name. We took the walk from Hole 4 to Hole 5 and turned it into a 363 ft par 3 that plays along the road, which is OB starting at the tee and running along the right side of the road. The pin will be tucked behind several old growth evergreen trees to the right of the road and right in front of the OB parking lot.

Our old friend, "Pebble Beach", is paying a visit and what timing! The temporary hole features a peninsula green with OB water directly in front of the tee. The hole plays 258 ft from the Pro tee and 201 ft from the Am tee/drop zone. The hole is adjacent to Hole 2 and should prove to be a tough decision for the players.

Our player packages feature a custom design by our resident artist, Manny Trujillo. The design is on our Innova Champion Tee Bird Plus and tee shirts and look sweet. Another local vendor, Team Crafty Scientist, supplied us with custom score cards. In addition to the custom swag, we give out some stickers, an Innova mini, and two raffle tickets for a couple of drawings on Saturday. These will also be for sale to anyone that wants seconds or to the Pro looking for a great deal. Only $25 gets you the whole package (while supplies last) or items can be purchased individually.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but thanks to:

Borderland State Park and Rangers
Borderland Disc Golf Club and all the volunteers
