Busy weekend in MA coming up

Wednesday, September 15, 2010  by John Borelli

David Stidham will be a busy man this weekend. He is TDing two events -- the Buffumville Dam Open on Saturday and the Village Open just down the street at Hodges Dam on Sunday. Both events are part of the NEFA points series while the Dam Open is a PDGA B-tier event.

Buffumville will also be unveiling its new layout and tee signs, so you could go home holding the new course record.

Also on Saturday is the Caboose Classic in Enfield, MA.

On Sunday Maple Hill hosts the PDGA Player's Cup Regional Qualifier. The top three finishers of this event receives an invitation to the Player's Cup held in sunny FL in cold November. You do not have to be a PDGA member to play this event and since there are only a few players signed up so far, your chances are good!

JD is hosting the North Shore Classic this Saturday with one round at Amesbury, Pyebrook, and his home course Pulpit Rock in MA. This is more of a party than a tournament, so if you can make it, do it! (more info)

On Sunday, the Ditterman's are holding their annual Disc Golf Widows & Abandoned Kids Invitational at Wickham Park in Manchester, CT. It is a fun, family-friendly event and all are welcome. (more info)

Doss and Jenkins' give clinic at Devens

Wednesday, September 1, 2010  by John Borelli

After playing the Vibram Open, World Champions Nate Doss, Valarie Jenkins, and Avery Jenkins stopped by Devens disc golf course in Devens, MA to give a members-only skills clinic to 26 tagholders.

The three pros reviewed the basics of throwing starting with grip, arm motion, hip and head positioning, and finally the all-important x-step. After some Q&A about technique and life on the road, Avery let loose some bombs across the field while Nate and Val worked one-on-one with a few people.

They also spent time autographing discs, posing for pictures, and just hanging out with us. It really was an awesome night.

> Visit the Devens website for more on the clinic

> Visit DiscGolfScene for more photos

Earlier in the day, several volunteers who have worked on the course a lot were invited to play a round with Val, Avery, Nate, and current <19 World Champion Ricky Wysocki. That of course was awesome because I've always wondered what a top pro would shoot on our course, never mind three. Playing it blind, Avery was one throw short of tying the course record with a 50 (-4), Nate shot a 53 (-1), Ricky shot par 54, and Val, well, she got her money's worth. I can only imagine what they'd shoot after a few more rounds under their belts.
