FDR Ice Bowl postponed!

Friday, February 26, 2010  by John Borelli

From TD, Bill Newman:

FDR park is closed. No power, no access, unplowed, no staff made it to work, the trees are loaded and dangerous. Yorktown is in a snow emergency. Brian the park manager has pulled the plug on the event.

Please spread the word to anybody who you think was planning to make it.

The tentative plan is to combine the FDR ICE Bowl with the Fools Fest which is scheduled for April 3rd. We can do the charity drive in conjunction with Fools Fest.

We are disappointed yes, but safety is consideration number one and we do not have permission to use the park

HCC Winter Winds draws record numbers

Wednesday, February 24, 2010  by John Borelli

From TD Jay Ducharme:

The third annual Winter Winds at Holyoke Community College on February 20 brought the largest attendance so far at an HCC event. Fifty-four players, many new to the course, showed up on an unseasonably warm but windy day for two rounds of doubles play. There were two Pro Open teams and one Pro Women's team. The rest of the players were AM1, AM2, Rec, and Novice.

The teams had their work cut out for them. In the November 2009 Autumn Winds tourney, a course record was set at 16 under par in the Pro Open division, and 11 under in the AM1 division. But unpredictable and blustery wind proved a challenging adversary this time around. And with no snow on the hardened ground, discs often rolled away from their intended target.

In the end, Pros Tim Jiardini and Jeff Wiechowski returned to the clubhouse with a 103, besting the team of Bill MacWilliams and Brent Sanderson by a single stroke. At 5 under par in the Advanced Open division, Leo Lacwasan and Simon McAlister took the crown from Titan Bariloni and Derek Brazauskas.

Chris Barden and Drew Garder won the Intermediate division at three under. Isaias Mercado and Nick Vassallo took the Recreational division with six over par. There was a three-way tie for runner-up in that division that forced a two-hole playoff, won by Laura Castanon and Erik Siersdale from Westfield State College. In the Novice division, two more WSC students won by default, being the only entrants. All totaled, Westfield State College took home six medals. That college seems to be a breeding ground for future disc golf players!

Everyone had a good time, and the tournament raised $376 for HCC's Bartley Fund for the Athletic Programs (disc golf included).
