May Madness starts this weekend!

Wednesday, April 28, 2010  by John Borelli

May Madness is back for its third year at Pye Brook Park and Amesbury Town Park as they play host to the Eastern MA Championships (EMC) and Amesbury Pines Open (APO) this weekend. The two courses are less than 15 miles apart and together make for a great weekend of competition.

As usual, TDs Bill Stewart and Mark Arnold will be serving up some Lady Pye at Saturday's EMC in Topsfield, MA. Pyebrook is one of the few open (and often windy) courses in the area where you can let it rip on most of the holes.

Veteran TD Dan Ouellet has handed over the APO reigns to first-time TD John Mucciarone this year. Amesbury is one of the oldest courses in New England and was recently damaged by the nasty wind and snow storms that hit us in February. According to John, though, the course is looking great with a new basket on 15, spruced up tee pads, and nice new Green Jackets to give to the winners.

A few spots are still available in these two fun tournaments. Don't miss out!

* APO flyer (Sunday)

Check your mailbox. NEFA bagtags on their way!

Monday, April 26, 2010  by John Borelli

After a few technical difficulties, the new NEFA member bagtags are ready and on their way to disc golf bags around New England. They've gone out in a few batches, so keep an eye out for yours. They're also sporting a new design, so we hope they were worth the wait.

Thank you NEFA volunteers Steve Hartwell and Dave McHale for working out the kinks and getting the tags out.

TIP: The tags are going to take a beating hanging from your bag, so you may want to wrap a few pieces of clear packing tape around yours to give it a little extra protection from the elements.

If you'd like one of your own tags and want to help support disc golf in New England, then please join NEFA today!

A Greener Golf

Thursday, April 22, 2010  by John Borelli

Submitted by Doug Bechtel:

What were you doing on April 22, 1970, the date of the first Earth Day? Chances are you were not playing disc golf, but a few people in Rochester, NY were.

In August of that year they were organizing tournaments and league play (more info). Now played by millions, disc golf is clearly the greener option than the manicured course ball and stick option. Is it coincidence that disc sports have attracted much of the same crowd that in the 1970s was leading the social and environmental movements? I think not.

To celebrate this 40th Earth Day, remember to respect the course, pick up after yourself, and promote our green sport. Pretty impressive that every course I go to recycles and offers a nature-rich experience. No recorded bird songs -- they are real. Fewer fertilizers and pesticides. No filling or re-shaping wetlands. Without the lands, we got nothing. Happy Earth Day.
